Just a single decade ago most people had never heard of the phrase social networking. Today, social networking websites are among some of the most frequently visited websites on the internet. One of the busiest of all of these social networking websites is Twitter. After coming into existence in 2006, Twitter has grown into one of the busiest websites on the internet, with millions of people making use of the website each day.
Whereas other social networking sites like Facebook can be quite involved, Twitter is relatively simple to use. In order to sign up, all one has to do is enter their email address and create a user name. That is it. After they have done that, they can immediately start sending out statuses. These statuses, called tweets, are limited to 140 characters.
While Twitter is not nearly as complicated as other social media websites, a person can personalize their page if they wish. They can upload a picture of themselves that will be displayed with every tweet they sent out. Twitter users can also upload a background picture that people will see when they load their page. If people wish, they can write a brief bio about themselves will will also appear next to their picture on their main page.
Instead of asking people to be friends like on other social media websites, on Twitter people have the option to follow people. When one chooses to follow someone, every tweet that individual sends out will appear in their feed. The more followers a person amasses, the more their tweets will be seen by other people.
Twitter users can also take other steps to ensure that more people see their tweets. By attaching a hashtag, otherwise known as a pound symbol onto a certain phrase, anyone who searches for that phrase will be able to see that persons tweet. If someone wishes to tweet someone directly, they can attach the commercial at symbol to that persons name. The tweet will then be sent directly to them.
Whether one wants to join Twitter to promote their business, keep up with friends or just to have some extra fun, anyone may just find a new virtual home that is easy to work with on the social networking giant.
